How would air quality and greenhouse gas emissions be affected if significant numbers of Americans drove cars that were fueled by the power grid?

As announced on July 19, 2007, an assessment conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Natural Resources Defense Council made a detailed study of the question - looking at a variety of scenarios involving the U.S. fleet of power generation and its fleet of light-duty and medium-duty cars and trucks.

The study focused on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and projected changes in power generation technology from 2010 through 2050.

The EPRI Electric Transportation program helps energy companies increase electricity sales, promote economic development and customer retention, improve customer satisfaction, and contribute to a cleaner environment by accelerating market penetration of electric-drive vehicles.

We can build upon these successes:

  • Plug-in hybrid vehicles are a common recognized phrase, even written in the 2005 Energy Policy Act
  • You and we together have an alliance with an OEM manufacturer to build and test plug-in hybrid vehicles with a path to commercialization
  • We have a PHEV project with Eaton Corporation, a major supplier to the heavy duty transportation industry
  • We have expanded our competency within our advisors and EPRI technical team
  • We have expanded our outreach to universities, ports, airports, and the environmental community

We are part of a growing national interest in electrifying transportation. We look forward to continuing to grow and collaborate with you in 2009!
